Polaris RMK Khaos Boost is the ultimate in mountain performance
By Steve Janes
By Steve Janes
The term “rise to the occasion” has taken on a whole new meaning when it comes to the Polaris RMK Khaos Patriot Boost. Not only does it have a raised and lightweight platform that allows it to lift up on top of the snow, but it has the power to blast through bottomless powder and scale any mountain slope where snow can stick.

Designed with precise balance that allows for an upright riding style that puts the rider in the proper neutral riding position, the Khaos Boost delivers unbeatable power and performance at the flick of a newly designed Polaris throttle system.

Power vs Awesome Power: tough choice between an aspirated or turbo engine
By Steve Janes
When the Summit X 850 was first introduced it was the top-of-the-line model that anchored the Ski-Doo mountain lineup. It had all the power, performance and lightweight characteristics needed to shine in the steep and deep.

Since then, as Ski-Doo continued to make refinements, the Summit X with Expert Package has taken on some of the cool new features, but also a little bit more weight, to emerge as the premium sled in their mountain line. But the Summit X still represented Ski-Doo’s best power-to-weight option available … until Ski-Doo introduced the Turbo R engine package.

Arctic Cat’s Catalyst trim selection just makes sense

By Steve Janes
Sometimes the best things are the simple things. Arctic Cat has tried to keep things really simple for 2025 by offering three trims for the mountain segment of its market. Making it even simpler, the trims are color-coded—black, green and blue.

The trims are basically distinguished by the suspension package. The black, or Catalyst M trim, features IFP shocks. These lightweight shocks are designed for deep snow and elevation. There’s nothing fancy; they are designed for off-trail, deep snow riding but are still capable of delivering a solid, smooth ride down the bumpy trail.

Making Tracks:

Length vs Width vs Profile

OEMs develop specific tracks for their products
By Steve Janes

It’s hard enough figuring out which specific snowmobile model best suits your riding style. But after you sort out all the engines, platforms and suspensions you then need to decide track length and profile.

The biggest challenge in making this decision comes with trying to predict the snow conditions and anticipate where you plan to do most of your riding this upcoming season. The editors of SnoWest Magazine can’t help you with these two decisions, but we’ll take a shot at helping you obtain a clearer focus on what OEM tracks are available along with their strengths and weaknesses.

Arctic Cat teams up with Garmin on its G8 gauge

By Brady L. Kay
Adding to the excitement of the Catalyst platform, Arctic Cat has released its fully integrated and completely new G8 gauge as part of its 2025 model lineup. The highly-advanced gauge is something Cat enthusiasts have been asking for (begging) for quite some time.

“A new display has been on Arctic Cat’s road map for a while,” says Justin Scholl, a computer/electrical engineer at Arctic Cat and the lead engineer for the G8 project. “One of the largest goals was to develop a robust system enough to grow with our future advancements and an ecosystem of trail information.”

As the editors of SnoWest Magazine test rode all the new 2025 snowmobiles last February, there were a lot of individual features on various models that we either seemed to like or dislike. One feature that met with a lot of mixed reviews was the Lynx Blade DS+ ski.

Since the Lynx Shredder has a unique ride, it was difficult to tell whether the ski affected the ride or the ride affected the ski. Either way, it was clear that the Linx ski had an impact for good or bad on our riding experience.

Polaris improves the brake fail/safe process
By Steve Janes
During the 2022-2023 snowmobile season, Polaris realized that their brake system was too over-sensitive and could accidently generate too much heat at the caliper/pad/brake rotor area and pose a fire risk.

Usually, this would occur when riders either set the park brake and didn’t totally release it when they started down the trail, or when riders applied pressure on the brake lever while engaging the throttle over a length of time.

Project Lefty Recap
How we brought our sled hauler back to life
By Brady L. Kay
Earlier this year we decided to do a magazine project truck so we’d have something to tow our sleds around this winter. I quickly discovered that “while I’m at it” and “as long as we’ve got it apart,” are the two most dangerous phrases that can be uttered when it comes to a truck build.

Looking back now I clearly bit off more than I could chew when I bought a 2004 Dodge RAM 2500 5.9L Cummins that had quite a few miles on the odometer, but we sure had a lot of fun. Blame it on my day job but I may have fell in love with the story idea of bringing back to life this old truck that I found in a farmer’s field. We ended up calling our build Project Lefty because this truck was clearly “lefty” for dead.

Whenever the conversation around here turns from sleds to trucks, the most common question we hear is “What’s the best all-around tire for my truck?”

Well, we have a little background in that area. SnoWest’s publishing group used to publish Diesel Tech magazine, a diesel performance title specializing in heavy-duty light diesel trucks.
