Can It Get Any
Better?
Power, weight and handling —hitting the trifecta
By Steve Janes
After getting a last-minute call to fill in on the Ski-Doo 2023 Introductory ride this past January and getting first-hand seat time on the new Gen5 platform which highlights the Summit line, I quickly realized that I picked the wrong time to retire. I can’t recall a time in the past four decades when I felt so excited to ride a new model line.

Ski-Doo didn’t just hit it out of the ballpark with the changes coming for 2023, it likely changed the game. There are three things that makes significant differences in a new snowmobile—weight reduction, power and handling. Ski-Doo managed to put big red checkmarks in all three of those boxes.

WHAT NEW ABOUT THE PATRIOT 9R?
  • All Patriot 9R RMKs will come standard with red Cobra pull cords. This replaces the traditional white nylon pull cords.
  • Why? Nylon cords stretch and cushion the shock of hitting the compression stroke when you pull over a big 2-stroke engine, slowing the rpm of the engine as you pull. However, since the 9R is a higher copression engine, Polaris engineers wanted to make it easier to start. A Cobra cord does not stretch, so you get faster rpm compression strokes with the Cobra cord compared to nylon.
  • The 9R regularly starts on the first pull. The Patriot 850 can take 2 rope pulls to fire.
  • You do feel more of the compression stroke when starting the 9R, but the single pull is worth it.
  • Polaris has measured the work effort starting a 9R vs an 850 NA, and the effort is lower on the 9R due to the Cobra cord.
  • The 7S display is optional on the 9R.
  • 9R and Patriot Boost exclusive graphics and colorways.

850 RMK Khaos 155 vs 850 Freeride 154 vs 800 Mountain Max
Every year we head up to Island Park for the SnoWest Mountain Sled Shootout. There we put the sleds to the tests in a variety of situations, truly challenging the sleds to see what they’ve got. This year’s tested sleds were Polaris’s 850 RMK Khaos 155, Ski-Doo’s 850 Freeride 154 and Arctic Cat’s 800 Mountain Max 154 SL featuring our test riders Broc Genta, Bruce Kerbs, Rhett Clark, Justin Stevens and SnoWest Publisher Ryan Harris.

Wet Weight
The Ski-Doo comes on super hard right off low end. The Polaris engages good, but you see the power later in the throttle. I don’t feel the weight on either sled.

When you’re in the tight trees, that harder bottom end hit of the Summit Turbo can wear you out. The easier bottom end of the Patriot Boost might be helpful in the trees where you don’t want the turbo kicking in that quickly.
