Terrain
Lynx offers two trims
for mountain riders
By Steve Janes
When Lynx introduced the 2023 Shredder line in the spring of 2022, it retired the Boondocker model with a lighter, more nimble Radien2 platform. This year Lynx offers two trims, the Shredder RE and Shredder DS. Although there are only subtle differences, these two trims separate terrain riders from deep snow riders.

The RE is for mountain terrain. It comes in two engine packages (Rotax 850 E-TEC and the Turbo R) and two track lengths (146 and 154). The DS only offers one engine package (Turbo R) and two track lengths (154 and 165). The RE is a playful mountain sled designed for taking big drops and pounding through moguls. The DS is the ultimate deep snow model with ultimate power and the more aggressive track length and profiles.

At first glance, it’s difficult to notice the difference between the two models, especially if you have an RE Turbo R model. You have to pay attention to the tracks to see the most notable differences.

Remember the days when you couldn’t wait to get into your snowmobile dealership in early fall to get first crack at the new models for the upcoming season? Well, those days are long gone.

The majority of all new sled purchases now occur in the spring during a pre-season order period some refer to as Snow Check. That doesn’t mean those who don’t place their orders are totally out of luck. But it does mean that you may be severely limited on engine sizes, track lengths and availability of suspension enhancements and state-of-the-art gauges and technology.

With the five snowmobile manufacturers, Yamaha is completely limited to pre-season sales for mountain models, while the other four accommodate somewhat for the in-season customer.

It’s getting close to “snow check” season but the information on the 2025 models is just barely starting to trickle out. Does it make any sense to put money down on a new snowmobile when you haven’t had adequate time to research it or ride it?

We assume that if there’s a new engine, suspension design or platform, it’s going to be better than the one it replaces. But there have been years when these changes really didn’t live up to their hype or there were still wrinkles in the system that needed to be ironed out.

Some buyers prefer waiting at least one year so they’re not stuck with some of the issues found during the consumer R&D period (often snowmobilers tend to shake out the bugs in a model that the engineers couldn’t find).

Pro RMK 650 remains
in the shadows
By Steve Janes

Bruce

Each year there seems to be a lot of hype for the new and most powerful. Many snowmobilers have opted to go the turbo route, or focused in on the new Catalyst suspension.

Several models have been overshadowed by more impressive trims. The Ski-Doo Summit X has been stepped over for the Expert; the Polaris 9R has been skipped for the Boost. So what model is the most underrated of the 2024 line?

You can look at the shiny new, or worship the turbo power, but there is not a more fun snowmobile than the Polaris Pro RMK 650 Patriot. This is one often overlooked snowmobile you can ride all day long and still feel fresh and ready to go out the next day.
